What is idiolect with concept and language in detail

Idiolect

IDIOLECT is an individual language of a person, a set of semantic and stylistic features of speech and texts of an individual native speaker of a given language. This is an individual version of the national language (compare with dialects – massive territorial variants). The specificity of the idiolect is created by the selection and preferences of linguistic units, the chosen use of their combination and compositional capabilities, and creative speech actions. In a broader sense, an idiolect is not only the features but also the entire composition of the speech of a linguistic personality.

The term idiolect is used when individual speech characteristics are taken as a whole as a set of units with their connections and relationships. It is used in general linguistics and dialectology (the study of the speech portrait of a dialect carrier). The term idiostyle emphasizes attention to the textual activity of the individual: the author’s communicative strategy, types of semantic development, the choice of regulatory structures, the pragmatic effect of the text. It is studied in the style of a literary text

Concept of Idiolect

IDEOLECTO is the way of speaking characteristic of each person. It manifests itself in a particular selection of lexicon, grammar, and also in peculiar words, phrases, and turns, as well as in intonation and pronunciation variants.

Idiolects fulfill the function of making the need to communicate with others compatible with the need for each person to express their particular way of being and thinking, their tastes and their needs. Each human being has an idiolect, or several. An idiolect always has, at least, zones of contact with an ecolect, a sociolect and a dialect or a language

An idiolect  is the distinctive speech of an individual, a linguistic pattern that is considered unique among speakers of a person’s language or dialect. But it is even more granular, narrower than just all the speakers of a particular dialect.

Notes from “Analysis of English Grammar“:

Because each of us belongs to different social groups, each of us speaks a variety of language made up of a combination of characteristics slightly different from the characteristics of any other speaker of the language. The unique linguistic variety of a single speaker of a language is called idiolect. Your idiolect includes vocabulary appropriate to your various interests and activities, pronunciations that reflect the region in which you live or have lived, and variable speaking styles that change subtly depending on who you are speaking to.

Idiolect and language

According to different views on the problem, either idiolect arise from some abstract standardized linguistic ideas protected by authorities (such as dictionary publishers), or languages are a collection of idiolects and thus exist only at the intersection of individual uses. While truth, if it exists, is likely to be somewhere in the continuum between these two opposing viewpoints, each of them constitutes an effective model for linguistic analysis. A more traditional scientific approach is expressed in the first assumption.

The second understanding of the idiolect became the basis for studying the evolution of language according to the genetic model: the existence of a species (a specific language) is due to the existence of many organisms (idiolects) with common properties. The evolution of a species is a consequence of changes in individual organisms. Idiolects change due to contact with other idiolects and change both during their life and from generation to generation.

In general, languages should be chosen according to the young brain ‘s ability to learn. But idiolects have such an ability to change, especially in our days, when contacts between different people are becoming more frequent, that the systematic properties of language, which have traditionally been the material for linguistic research, are in constant flux.

To date, there is no general theory of communication based on idiolects. Most important, however, is that regardless of whether the language is a pre-established tradition or it is re-created with every communication, there are cognitive abilities that are common to all people and allow them to communicate with each other. These tools inherent in symbolic communication include the ability to assess a situation and provide the necessary information, access to short and long-term memory , the ability to differentiate and make sense of events in the past, and the ability to recognize that the other person’s brain also uses these and other tools. in order to express your inner state and understand the expression of the inner state of another person.
