Words classified as adjectives  ( adjectives ) have the purpose to qualify, modify and/or define a noun or a pronoun. Words like “empty”, “quicky”, “honest”, “attractive” and “cold” are some examples of adjectives. In this article we will provide you the examples of adjectives.

In the English language, adjectives have some characteristics regarding the position occupied in the sentence and the gender and number, different from the Portuguese language, they are:

Adjectives are placed before the nouns that will qualify, modify or define in the sentence. For example, in the phrase “ I bought a small TV ” the correct way, in English, is to use the adjective “small” (small) before the noun and not as in Portuguese “I bought a small TV”, where the adjective appears after the substantive.

Examples

  • My sister wants a green dress to go to the party today. (My sister wants a green dress to go to the party today)
  • The girl likes to read horror books at night. (The girl likes to read horror books at night)
  • Carlos wants to sell his fast motorcycle. (Carlos wants to sell his fast bike)

  • I am tired, it is time to sleep. (I’m tired, it’s time to sleep)
  • He is able to do this. (He is able to do that)

Adjectives have no gender difference, that is, they can be used for both sexes, remaining with the same spelling regardless of whether the word is feminine or masculine.
Examples:

  • The boy is blond. (The boy is blond)
  • The girl is blond. (The girl is blonde)
  • João is beautiful and smart, I love him. (João is handsome and smart, I like him)
  • Paula is beautiful and smart, I love her. (Paula is beautiful and smart, I like her)

English adjectives do not vary in number, that is, they do not change according to the quantity and remain with the same spelling, even with the plural noun.
