The Anthroponyms
Anthroponymy or anthropological onomastics is the branch of the onomastics that studies the origin and meaning of the person’s own names, including surnames. Anthroponyms are understood as those proper nouns, used to name people or animals, from their unique and particular name, and not by that which would indicate the generic group to which they belong.
An anthroponym is a noun that refers to a human being. In short, anthroponyms are the proper name by which a person is known. This can be composed of:
- First name
- Last name
- Nickname
- Alias
- Pseudonyms
- Artistic names
That is, anthroponyms are used to individualize human beings and thus be able to distinguish each other, although there are many people who have the same name, each of these names are used to designate each of these people separately . All person names are anthroponyms.
We can define as Anthroponyms the noun that is used to identify a person, be it their name, surnames, nicknames, aliases, cryptonyms, among many others.
These are used to designate an individual to be able to distinguish it from the rest and over the years it has gained great value in the daily life of the human being, however, the anthroponyms can vary depending on the country or region in which it is found, although this does not mean that their functions are not the same.
Classification of Anthroponyms
Next, we will provide you with a list of the classification that Anthroponyms have :
- Anthroponyms can be classified into kinship names such as mom, sister, among others.
- Nicknames or surnames used for unknown people such as “so-and-so”.
- Proper or first names such as “Luis”, “Maria”, among others.
- Nicknames or aliases that supplant the identity of a person.
- Religious names that replace a person’s name when entering it.
- antonomastic names.
- Cryptonyms, that is, a combination of the initials of names and surnames of a person.
- Mixtures of the above, adding titles such as “Dr.” “son” sequences or “widow of” relationships.
Where do they come from?
Some of these nouns are shaped by the same society and its daily modifications. For example, if a person enters a certain religion or military position, he is called the nickname “captain,” “general,” “cardinal,” “bishop,” etc.
As for the last name , it comes from the paternal branch and is characteristic of the whole family. Often the baby can also carry the mother‘s and father’s last name. If you do not have a father, you can write the child with the mother‘s last name. As a curious fact it is interesting to say that the term “surname” comes from the Latin word ” appeal “, which means “to call” or “to call.”
Following the structure of the anthroponyms we can say that in pre-state societies a name was designated by some physical or symbolic characteristic. Already in the most modern societies (with the constitution of the State) the anthroponym consists of a first name (individual) and a family or group name or surname.
However, in this type of modern societies you can also find distinctive features of a certain group or family that, over the generations, has become the family name. Example: it is very common that both Spanish and Italian surnames have physical characteristics or traits. For example, the surname ” Rosso ” or ” Rossi ” means ” pink ” in Italian . That is, ” pink skin .”
