The AFI has undergone numerous changes throughout its history and the successive revisions carried out between 1932 – a version that was maintained for more than half a century – and the reform of the IPA Convention in Kiel (1989). Since then, minor changes have been made, in 1993 and 1996, until the current version defined in 2005.The
history of the International Phonetic Alphabet and the
International Phonetic Association begins at the end of the 19th century, with the constitution of said association and its express proposal to create a valid phonetic system to transcribe the sounds of
spoken language . The association was founded by a group of
language teachers from France and England led by Paul Passy , and was officially established in Paris in 1886 . The first phonetic alphabet was published in 1888 in Passy. For its configuration, the association was based on the Roman Alphabet created by Henry Sweet, which in turn was inspired by the Phonotypic Alphabet created by Isaac Pitman and
Alexander John Ellis (Kelly 1981).
