Core of the subject and predicate with examples

Core of the subject and predicate

In order to analyze sentences in Spanish, you must learn to recognize the elements that compose them. The first instance is the subject and the predicate; the subject is the one who performs an action and the predicate describes the action that the subject performed. These types of sentences are called bimembral (two-member, subject and predicate). Core of the subject and predicate

To know what the subject is, one must answer the question of “who?”, And to know the predicate, the question of “what?” For example, in “Luis eats fruits”, the subject is Luis and the predicate eats fruits .

Now, each of these members has a nucleus, which is the fundamental element of the phrase. The nucleus of the subject (or noun phrase) can be a noun or a pronoun; the core of the predicate (or verb phrase) is the main verb of the sentence.

How to identify

As we already said, the core of the subject can be a noun or a pronoun, and it is the central word of the subject. It must always agree in number and person with the conjugation of the verb. Let’s take an example: “The boys on the corner play soccer.”

If the subject answers the question of who, we have that it would be The boys on the corner , and if the predicate answers the question of what, it would be they play soccer . In the noun phrase, the kernel is boys .

In the cases of pronouns, we would have the following: “They play soccer”: the core of the subject would be them , which agrees in person and number with the verb (they play ).

There are sentences in which the subject is tacit, that is, it does not expressly appear: “We have a lot of work ahead of us.” In this case, the subject is We , since it agrees in number and person with the verb, which is We . The core of the subject in this case is Us .

On the other hand, there are two types of subjects according to how many nuclei it has, a simple subject and a compound subject. The simple subject is the one with only one nucleus. For example, “Several children watched the concert in the square from the balcony.” The subject is Several children , and its nucleus children .

Another example: “The big green trees rustled in the breeze”, the subject is The big green trees , and the core is trees .

The composite subject is the one with two or more nuclei, linked by connectors: “My brother and I want to go to the William Turner exhibition in the museum.” The subject is my brother and me , and the nuclei are brother and me .

Another example: “A dog and a cat were fighting in the street.” The nuclei would be dog and cat .

How to identify the core of the predicate?

The core of the predicate is the most important word, it is the main verb around which the other elements of the predicate are syntactically organized. It is a conjugated verb in any of its personal forms, and agrees in number and person with the subject.

For example: “The boys on the corner play soccer”, here the predicate is they play soccer , and the core is they play (it agrees in number and person with the subject). Another example: “My little daughter learned to read at the age of three.” The predicate is learned to read at three years , and the nucleus is learned , since it is the most important verb in the sentence, and the one that agrees with the subject.

The predicate can be of two classes according to the type of verb: verbal predicate and nominal predicate. The verbal predicate has as its nucleus a non-copulative verb, that is, a predicative verb that expresses only a complete idea, as in “The boys play soccer”, “We ate all the dessert”.

The nominal predicate is the one whose nucleus is a copulative verb (to be, to be, to be, to appear), as in “The trees are tall”, “Juan is happy”. Core of the subject and predicate

The predicate can also be simple or compound; the simple is the one that contains a single verb as a nucleus (“The apple trees bloomed early”), and the compound is the one that contains more than one verbal nucleus (“ They sang and laughed with happiness”).
