Sedentary

Death has always been an implacable enemy, but many times it happens because of the human being himself and his bad decisions. In some cases, exposure to the risks of living outdoors has been one of the causes of death for many. In this article we will make you known about the Sedentary lifestyle meaning.

This was prevalent in prehistoric times , where most peoples were nomads and did not have a single, safe place to live. Later, this was improving due to the change of life of the man. Therefore, below we will talk about sedentary people, their characteristics and some of the first sedentary peoples .

Sedentary lifestyle

Human beings the more time passes, the more they fall in love with stability. An example of this is that in youth all the time they want to party or go out with friends and once they enter adulthood they prefer to stay at home watching movies with a blanket and hot chocolate, not long after they begin to think in marriage and children, so that finally when they reach the third age they only prefer to be at home waiting for the visit of their grandchildren.

Something similar happened throughout history with nomadic communities that gradually became sedentary communities over time. Although at present the qualifier of sedentary lifestyle could mean many things, such as the lack of physical exercise, if we transfer its meaning to a few years ago, sedentary lifestyle is the way in which a people, tribe or group of people remained in a single space and took it as their home .

It is said that the sedentary process began in the Neolithic , approximately 10,000 years ago in the Middle East. After that, it spread throughout all the continents, either by diffusion or simply spontaneously, such as in Africa, China, New Guinea and America. The process of sedentary lifestyle was definitively consolidated with the creation of the first cities, since these represented the culmination of the process of human sedentarism which continues to this day.

Characteristics of the first sedentary peoples

In the first sedentary peoples there were three main characteristics which made the settlers settle in the same place and adopt it as their way of life. Those characteristics are the following:

  • Agriculture was successful in sustaining food , especially when the planet’s temperatures rose after the last ice age .
  • Their survival was greater because they could protect themselves from wild animals, they were better fed and were not exposed to the dangers of living in the open, they also formed armies.
  • Its stable political and social structures , order and authority were present.

The first sedentary communities

More or less in the year 5 thousand BC, the central Andean region became sedentary thanks to the development of horticulture and also grazing in the mountains . In addition to exploiting the marine resources of the Coast, it was determined that the temporary camps became permanent and definitive populations.

On the Central Coast they moved to the north of the Peruvian Current and there was a warm and fairly humid climate characteristic of the area, this determined the desiccation of this continental sector which impoverished the hills and valleys, but also increased dramatically the marine biomass.

The remains of these first villages were until not long ago in the surroundings of the Chillón, Lurín and Rímac rivers, these have unfortunately disappeared because of man with industrial and human development. However, in Punta Márquez you can see the remains of the rustic unworked stone constructions that made up the early villages.

In the same way, on Chira-Villa beach you can also see some vestiges similar to those of El Chillón and in the sandy areas of Lurín, you can see several shells that show the early settlements.

After a modernization of the techniques of exploitation of the resources, the new villages were distributed along the coast and there was no longer much distance between each one, they skirted the valleys and ascended through the foothills of the Andes. By 4000 BC the entire coastline was inhabited with settlements that were between 7 and 10 kilometers apart and were made up of an average of between 10 and 20 families.

The sites where they settled were the following: Ventanilla, Ancón, Bocanegra, Punta Márquez, Magdalena, La Perla, Corrillos, Bajada de Baños, Tablada de Lurín, Chira-Villa, Punta Roca, Curayacu and Playa Arica.

The sedentary and nomads

The sedentary modernized their economic models, in addition to rapidly becoming more organized populations with much more stable economies and policies . Because of this they were able to survive much longer than nomads because they were better able to combat dangers, in addition to being much better fed.

Of course, all sedentary people had a nomadic past and before many societies settled they had several episodes of a return to nomadism. This ceased because nomads were much more vulnerable to the myriad dangers of living in the open. For this reason, in our days practically all societies are sedentary, nomadic peoples are scarce mainly due to the issue of land, since most have an owner.
