What is Velociraptor definition/concept

Some Hollywood movies have a powerful seductive effect and have become authentic cultural  references. That’s what happened with the movie “Jurassic Park”, by Steven Spielberg, which thanks to this reproduction made dinosaurs and paleontology become fashionable. In the film appears one of the most original saurians, the velociraptor. Its scientific name is Velociraptor Mongolienses, which literally means “the quick hunter of Mongolia”.

What do we know about this dinosaur?

Paleontology experts say he lived in the late Cretaceous period 80 million years ago. It was a carnivorous dinosaur that measured 1.8 meters and weighed approximately 15 kg. Its paws had a powerful claw with which it could attack its prey. This bipedal dinosaur stood out for its speed, as it surpassed 40 km/h. It belongs to the group of Saurischian dinosaurs, which are very similar to today’s reptiles. Despite its light weight, it was a fearsome predator due to its powerful jaws with sharp teeth. It had a skull with an upward curvature and a skeleton very similar to today’s birds.

Contrary to what is shown in Spielberg’s film, the velociraptor had feathers and powerful claws measuring 10 cm in length. Because he had a big brain , experts say he predictably had a big intelligence  .

It fed on prey with a size larger than its own, normally they were herbivorous dinosaurs. It is known that after capturing his prey, he would break it into pieces to make it easier to eat. Velociraptor

These dinosaurs were oviparous, had warm blood and built their nests underground to protect the eggs.

Skeletons and fossil remains from the past are studied in paleontology

There are several scientific disciplines that study some dimension of the most remote past. Archeology is focused on analyzing and understanding ruins, ancient artifacts, mummies and ancient civilizations. The paleografia deals with forms of writing of antiquity.

Paleontology studies life in its most primitive forms. Dinosaur knowledge is one of the specialties of this branch of science. This discipline is also related to geology.

Why did dinosaurs disappear?

The extinction of dinosaurs is a topic of debate in the scientific community. Despite this, there is an important hypothesis  : a meteorite fell on Earth and produced an intense heat wave causing in turn a climate change. This change in climatology triggered the gradual disappearance of the dinosaurs. This is the official version, but not all scientists share this idea, as for them a global disaster should affect all species  and not just dinosaurs. Velociraptor
