What is Ischemia definition/concept/elaboration

Ischemia is a decrease in blood flow to a part of the body. This situation causes an injury as it reduces the supply of oxygen and necessary nutrients that arrive through the blood. If this situation is maintained , an infarction may occur, that is, necrosis or cell death due to lack of irrigation .

Normally, ischemia occurs due to an arterial obstruction (arteries are the blood vessels that leave the heart and carry oxygen and nutrients to the most varied organs of the human body). The main causes of an arterial obstruction are: thrombosis or clots that occur within the vessel wall until its obstruction; spasms (created on occasion by some drug) and tumors.

There are several types of ischemia : transient, permanent, acute and chronic . This diversity can be observed in different organs and thus it is possible to talk about the different types of ischemia.

Cardiac and cerebral ischemia

Ischemic heart disease is a general concept that occurs in several ways: by an arrhythmia, angina, heart failure, myocardial infarction or sudden death. In all of these cases, there is usually a sharp pain behind the breastbone, which radiates to the arm, neck, and shoulder. Cardiac ischemia with no apparent symptoms (better known as asymptomatic or silent) rarely occurs.

An ischemic attack occurs in the brain due to lack of blood, high blood pressure being its main cause. One of the most frequent variations of this type of stroke is stroke, or as more common, atherosclerosis, even if there is cardiac embolism caused by an unknown and undetermined cause.

Prevention

Doctors often repeat an idea in relation to health: the important thing is to prevent and not cure. It is a truth that no one dares to contradict.

In this case, ischemia has a series of patterns that act preventively. In the first place , it is recommended to consume food without fat and have a diet balanced. It is advisable to reduce alcohol consumption as much as possible, not to smoke and avoid stress. At the same time, more and more importance is given to moderate and regular physical exercise. Finally, it is important to have regular medical checkups and to take blood pressure (especially people with a family history of high blood pressure).
