What is competency management

There are several ways to manage teams within companies. There are also many benefits of competency management, which relies on people’s knowledge and skills as a result of their growth within the organization.

The competency management model is a type of administration that considers the skills of employees, aiming at the employee’s growth within the company.

Differently from performance management, competency management investigates the strengths of each individual, making their best capabilities stand out and helping them to achieve certain goals.

Different types of skills

Competencies, in general, are divided into three aspects, as we will see below.

1-Organizational

These are characteristics inherent to the company. Also, with values, beliefs and purpose that represent the organization and differentiate it from others. Thus, organizational skills can be understood as the essence of the company, which inevitably relates to the people who are part of the organization.

Thus, the set of attributes of employees reflect on the company as a whole, that is, a traditional and luxurious company, for example, has a special type of essence that defines it. As well as a more informal and relaxed company, it also carries organizational skills related to this posture.

2-Techniques

Technical skills are those that people acquire throughout their academic training or through courses and even through professional experiences. Some examples of technical skills are: bachelor’s degree, specializations, language skills, knowledge of a specific tool, etc.

3-behavioral

Behavioral skills have to do with the employee’s response in different work situations. It also concerns qualities such as leadership, team relationships, communication and emotional balance. For that, it considers the type of personality that the employee has and how he/she behaves in the daily business.

Benefits of competency management

One of the main benefits of competency management is the possibility of directing people to the right places. Each employee has assignments that can be put to good use in specific roles and teams. Therefore, doing this administration has advantages, such as:

  • cost reduction : when a person is placed in a position that matches their competencies, it is not necessary to train them to acquire those qualifications and do a job well done, thus reducing training costs;
  • increased productivity : an employee who achieves his goals, delivers results, feels satisfied with his work and, inevitably, produces more and better;
  • improvement in the organizational climate : employees allocated to appropriate teams and in roles that make sense to them, feel more comfortable carrying out their tasks and see themselves as part of the team. Thus, the working environment tends to improve considerably;
  • improvement in the recruitment and selection process: when this process of identification of competencies is carried out in the recruitment and selection phase, the insertion of this candidate is more natural, integrating them more easily into the team and developing their tasks better.

However, implementing competency-based management is a process that provides great advantages in the individual and collective scope, making your company grow in a healthy and well-structured way.
