Apposition in grammar with types and 50 examples

Apposition

An apposition is a clarification that modifies the head of a noun phrase and provides information to specify it. For example: Mario, my husband, got a job. In this article we will describe the apposition in grammar with examples

The apposition is one of the complements of the noun and adds content through the juxtaposition of elements, that is, without the use of connectors. In general, it usually appears between commas, but not every clarification that appears between these signs is necessarily an apposition.

Types of apposition

Appositions can be of two types:

  • explanatory apposition . It is a complement of the name, that is to say that it provides extra information, and it always goes between commas, since it has a parenthetical character. For example: Maria, the neighbor’s daughter, is a good girl. In this case, “neighbor’s daughter” is an explanatory apposition that clarifies who María is, the nucleus of the subject.
  • Specific apposition . It is a complement to the name and provides additional specific information to differentiate that element or subject from the others. It is not found between commas, but appears attached to the name it modifies, with which it forms a noun phrase. Many times they are proper names accompanied by certain general common nouns . For example: Aunt Juana will come to visit us tomorrow. In this case, “Juana” is a specific apposition that differentiates this aunt from the others.
